Introduction

The Women's Tennis Association is the international tennis organization for women's. This is also known as the WTA . The organization is equivalent to ATP for the men's tennis. In the year 2005 WTA is rechristened to The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. The Women's Tennis Association was found at Houston, Texas. In 23 September, 1970 this organization came into being. During this period the Virginia Slims event was taking place. This event was used as a platform to launch the new organization controlling the women's tennis all over the world.

Billie Jean King was a major figure who featured very prominently in the process of formation of this organization. He also played a major part in the WTA in its formative years.

Categories of WTA

The women's tennis association has divided several tournaments held under them into different categories. These categories are based on the nature and the quality of tournament. The popularity of each of the tournament is based on the category that the tournament belongs to. The first category among them is Grand Slam. There are four grand slam tournaments played all throughout the year. These are the most popular form of tennis tournament among the spectators as well as the players. The four grand slam tournaments are Australian Open, US Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. The next category is the season ending championships. These tournaments are held at the completion of each season in tennis. The prize money for these tournaments is three million dollars. The lowest category of tournaments is the tier tournaments. The tier tournaments are divided into 4 tiers where the prize money depends upon the tier of the tournament. The quality of tournament also depends upon the tier.

WTA Ranking

Women Tennis Association also releases ranking of the players in the world. The rankings are generally released after every week. The rankings are based on the performance of the players in each and every rounds of a tournament. The ranking generally changes after every as per the performance of players in any tournament during that week.
