Lindsay Davenport from United States defeated Yugoslavia's Jelena Dokic by 7-5, 6-4. Tamarine Tanasugarn was defeated by Nathalie Tauziat from France by 6-3, 6-2. American Venus Williams won in the match against Russian Nadia Petrova by 6-2, 6-0. All the winners forwarded to the quarterfinals.
