Women's Singles at the 2001 Wimbledon Tennis Tournament

Introduction

The Lawn Tennis Championships at wimbledon was played for the first trime in 1877. It was witnessed by a few hundred spectators. Afterwards it got world-wide popularity. There were five main events held at Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. They were Men Singles, Women Singles, Men Doubles, Women Doubles and Mixed Doubles. In addition to that, four events for juniors were held. They were Boys' singles, Girls' singles, Boys' doubles and Girls' doubles.

 

Matches in Women Singles event were played in three sets. Single elimination system was applied in the tournament. That means a player who lost in a single match was immediately eliminated from the tournament. Women Singles at the 2000 Wimbledon Tennis Tournament started on 25th June on wimbledon Park in London.

Tennis attracted attention of many countries. Many players from different countries actively took part in this event. The participating nations were Spain, Belgium, Russia, Germany, United States, France, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia.

Performance in men Singles at the 2001 wimbledon Tennis Tournament:

Women's Singles included four rounds. In the fourth round, Conchita Martinez from Spain defeated Russia's Lina Krasnoroutskaya by 6-3, 6-4. Germany's Anke Huber was defeated by Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne by 4-6, 6-2 and 6-2. American Jennifer Capriati defeated Sandrine Testud from France by 6-1, 6-2. Another American player Serena Williams defeated Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva by 6-2, 6-1. Belgium's Kim Clijsters defeated Meghann Shaughnessy from United States by 7-6, 7-6. Lindsay Davenport from United States defeated Yugoslavia's Jelena Dokic by 7-5, 6-4. Tamarine Tanasugarn was defeated by Nathalie Tauziat from France by 6-3, 6-2. American Venus Williams won in the match against Russian Nadia Petrova by 6-2, 6-0. All the winners forwarded to the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals, Justine Henin-Hardenne defeated Conchita Martinez by 6-1, 6-0. Jennifer Capriati defeated Serena Williams by 6-7, 7-5 and 6-3. Lindsay Davenport defeated Kim Clijsters by 6-1, 6-2. Nathalie Tauziat was defeated by Venus Williams by 7-5, 6-1.
In the semifinals, Justine Henin-Hardenne from Belgium defeated Jennifer Capriati from United States by 2-6, 6-4 and 6-2. The second semifinal match was played between American players. Venus Williams defeated Lindsay Davenport by 6-2, 6-7 and 6-1.
In the final match, American Venus Williams defeated Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne by 6-1, 3-6 and 6-0 and won the 'Shield'.
Thus the players from United States showed dominant performance at Women Singles at the 2001 Wimbledon Tennis Tournament.
