Men's Singles at the 2001 Wimbledon Tennis Tournament

Introduction

The Lawn Tennis Championships at wimbledon was played for the first time in the year 1877. It was witnessed by a few hundred spectators. Afterwards it got world-wide popularity. There were five main events held at Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. They were Men Singles, Women Singles, Men Doubles, Women Doubles and Mixed Doubles. In addition to that, four events for juniors were held. They were Boys' singles, Girls' singles, Boys' doubles and Girls' doubles.

 

Matches in Men Singles were played in five sets. Single elimination system was applied in the tournament. That means a player who lost in a single match was immediately eliminated from the tournament. Goran Ivanisevic showed amazing performance in Men Singles at the 1998 Wimbledon Tennis Tournament.

As popularity of Tennis increased through out the world, more and more nations started to take part in this biggest tennis tournament. The players from United States, United Kingdom, Spain, Armenia, Argentina, Israel, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Thailand, Austria, Netherlands, Italy, Russia, Canada, South Korea, Slovakia, South Africa, France, Denmark, Belarus, Australia, Zimbabwe, Brazil and Romania enthusiastically competed in different events.

Performance in men Singles at the 2002 wimbledon Tennis Tournament:

Total 8 sections were held in the Singles Tournament. Each section included 4 rounds. The loser in each round was eliminated from the contest. The winners in the fourth round of each section qualified for the quarterfinals. Following players in the 8 sections qualified for the quarterfinals:
Roger Federer from Switzerland, Tim Henman from United Kingdom, Marat Safin from Russia, Goran Ivanisevic from Croatia, Thomas Enqvist from Sweden, Australia's Patrick Rafter, Nicolas Escude from France, Andre Agassi from United States In the quarterfinals, Roger Federer was defeated by Tim Henman by 7-5, 7-6, 2-6 and 7-6. Goran Ivanisevic defeated Marat Safin by 7-6, 7-5, 3- and 7-6. Patrick Rafter won in the match played against Thomas Enqvist by 6-1, 6-3 and 7-6. Andre Agassi defeated Nicolas Escude by 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2. The winners qualified for the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Goran Ivanisevic defeated Tim Henman by 7-5, 6-7, 0-6, 7-6 and 6-3. The second semifinal match was played between Australia's Patrick Rafter and American Andre Agassi. Patrick Rafter defeated André Agassi in head-to head match by 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and 8-6.
In the final match, Goran Ivanisevic from Croatia defeated Australian Patrick Rafter by 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 2-6 and 9-7.
Thus Goran Ivanisevic became the first Croatian player to win the trophy in Men Singles at the 2001 Wimbledon Tennis Tournament.
