Format of the French Open Tennis Tournament

Introduction

Officially known as the Tournoi de Roland Garros or the Roland Garros tournament, the French Open is the second Grand Slam Event that is held in a year. This tournament is named after a hero of World War I named Roland Garros who was a pilot. In the beginning French Open was only a national tournament but after 1925 French Open became open to international Competitors. It is the only Grand Slam Event that features clay courts for holding the events. This affects the game strategy. This event is held between the period mid May and early June. Format of the French Open Tennis Tournament determines the manner in which the events in various years are held.

Courts at French Open

Format of the French Open Tennis Tournament was almost the same throughout all the years. The event in each year was broadly categorized into Mens Singles, Womens Singles, Mens Doubles, Womens Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Junior Championships. For the Mens and Womens Singles and Doubles and the Mixed Doubles events, it was then again categorized into certain rounds. There were certain preliminary rounds that were known as the Sections. Generally there were eight section rounds that were played. The players who qualified from these section rounds played in the quarterfinals, semifinals and the finals. There was also a particular format that was followed in the selection of the players into the events. Apart from the ATP rankings certain players were also given Wild Card entries. These were special type entries in which certain players were given entry to the tournament at the discretion of the organizers of that tournament. Generally these wild cards were given to such players who were once in top rankings and are now trying to make a comeback. In the Junior Championships the tournament was divided into Boys Singles, Girls Singles, Boys Doubles and Girls Doubles.
