Introduction

The French Open is the second Grand Slam Tournament that is held in a year. It is held in the period between mid May and early June in Paris which is situated in France. It is officially known as The Tournoi de Roland Garros. It is also known as the Roland Garros tournament. This tournament in its earlier stages started as a national competition but after 1925 it became open to international competitors. This tournament is named after a hero of World War I named Roland Garros who was a pilot. This is the only Grand Slam Event that features clay courts for holding the events.

 

These clay courts provide great challenge to the participants as the game strategy changes in these courts. The 2003 French Open Tennis Tournament was one such event that was held in the red clay court of Philippe Chatrier.

In the Mens Singles category previous year finalist Juan Carlos Ferrero won the title by defeating Martin Verkerk by straight sets. The score line was 6-1, 6-3, 6-2. In the Womens Singles Justine Henin won the title after she defeated Kim Clijsters by 6-0, 6-4. In the Mens Doubles category Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan defeated previous champion Paul Haarhuis and Yevgeny Kafelnikov by 7-6, 6-3. In the Womens Doubles category Kim Clijsters and Ai Sugiyama defeated Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez by 6-7, 6-2, 9-7. The Mixed Doubles category saw Lisa Raymond and Lime Bryan conquering the title after they defeated Elena Likhovtseva and Mahesh Bhupathi by 6-3, 6-4. In the Junior Championships the Boys Doubles was won by Stanislas Wawrinka. The Girls Singles was won by Anna-Lena Groenefeld. The Boys Doubles was won by Gyorgy Balazs and Dudi Sela and the Girls Doubles was won by Marta Fraga-Perez and Adriana Gonzales-Penas.
