Introduction

The French Open was officially known as the Tournoi de Roland Garros or the Roland Garros Tournament. This is the second Grand Slam event that is held in a year after the Australian Open. This tournament is generally held in the mid May and early June period in Paris which is situated in France. It is the premier clay court tennis tournament in the World. These clay courts provide a great challenge to the participants as these courts tend to slower the pace of the ball and also give an extra bounce to the ball. The 1999 French Open Tennis Tournament was one such event held in the clay court of Philippe Chatrier.

In the men Singles event Andre Agassi won the titles after defeating Andrei Medvedev by 1-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. In the Women Singles category Steffi Graff again made a comeback by defeating Martina Hingis by 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. The men Doubles category was won by Mahesh Bhupati and Leander Paes after they defeated Goran Ivanisevic and Jeff Tarango by straight sets 6-2, 7-5. In the Women Doubles category Venus Williams and Serena Williams defeated Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova by 6-3, 6-7, 8-6. In the Mixed Doubles Katarina Srebotnik and Piet Norval defeated Larisa Savchenko Neiland and Rick Leach by 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. In the Junior Championships the Boys Singles was won by Guillermo Coria. The Women Singles was won by Lourdes Dominquez Lino. The Boys Doubles was won by Irakli Labadze and Lovro Zovko and the Girls Doubles was won by Flavia Pennetta and Roberta Vinci.
