Introduction

The French Open is the second Grand Slam Event that is held in a year. It is held between the period of mid May and early June in Paris which is situated in France. It is officially known as the Tournoi de Roland Garros or the Roland Garros tournament. This tournament is named after a World War I hero named Roland Garros who was a pilot in the war. It is the premier clay court tennis tournament in the world. In the beginning the French Open started as a national tournament. But in 1925 it became open to the international competitors.

 

However the clay courts provided great challenge to the participants as these courts tend to slower the ball pace. The 1996 French Open Tennis Tournament was one such event held in the red clay court of Philippe Chatrier.

In the men Doubles the title was won by Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Daniel Vacek after they defeated Guy Forget and Jakob Hlasek by 6-2, 6-3. In the Women Doubles category Lindsay Davenport and Mary Joe Fernandez defeated previous year champion Gigi Fernandez and Natalia Zvereva. The score line was 6-2, 6-1. In the Mixed Doubles category Patricia Tarabini and Javier Frana defeated Nicole Arendt and Luke Jensen by straight sets 6-2, 6-2. In the Junior Championshipsthe Boys Singles was won by Alberto Marin. The Girls Singles was won by Amelie Mauresmo. The Boys Singles was won by Sebastien Grosjean and Olivier Mutis and the Girls Doubles was won by Alice Canepa and Giulia Casoni.
