Introduction

Officially known as the Tournoi de Roland Garros or the Roland Garros Tournament, the French Open is the second Grand Slam tournament that is held in a year. It is held in Paris which is situated in France. This tournament is named after a hero of World War I named Roland Garros who was a pilot. This is the only Grand Slam Tournament that conducts all its events in the clay courts. These clay courts provide a great challenge to the participants as these courts tends to slower the pace of the ball and give extra bounce. So the strategy of playing changes.

 

The 1994 French Open Tennis Tournament was one such event that was held in the red clay courts of Philippe Chatrier.The event of French Open was a national tournament in its earlier stages in 1891 but after 1925 it became open to the international participants.

In the Women Singles Arantxa Sanchez Vicario defeated Mary Pierce by straight sets 6-4, 6-4. In the men Doubles category Byron Black and Jonathan Stark defeated Jan Apell and Jonas Bjorkman by straight sets 6-4, 7-6. In the Women Doubles Gigi Fernandez and Natalia Zvereva again created history by winning the title for the third time by defeating Lindsay Davenport and Lisa Raymond by straight sets. The score line was 6-2, 6-2. In the Mixed Doubles category Kristie Boogert and Menno Oosting defeated Larisa Savchenko Neiland and Andrei Olhovskiy by 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. In the Junior Championships the Boys Singles was won by Jacobo Diaz. The Girls Singles was won by Martina Hingis. The Boys Doubles was won by Gustavo Kuerten and Nicolas Lapentti and the Girls Doubles was won by Martina Hingis and Henrieta Nagyova.
