Introduction

The French Open is the second Grand Slam Event that is held in a year. It is held in Paris which is situated in France. It is held in between mid May and early June. It is officially known as the Tournoi de Roland Garros or the Roland Garros tournament. The French Open in 1891 was only a national tournament but after 1925 it became open to international competitors. This tournament is named after a World War I hero named Roland Garros who was a pilot. This is the only Grand Slam event that is held in Clay courts. These clay courts provide great challenge to the participants as these clay courts tend to slower down the ball and provide extra bounce also.

 

The 1993 French Open Tennis Tournament was one such tournament to be held in the Philippe Chatrier court. This Court is made out of red clay.

In the men Singles category Sergi Bruguera defeated previous year champion Jim Courier by 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. In the Women Singles category Steffi Graff made a comeback and defeated Mary Joe Fernandez by 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. In the Men Doubles category Luke Jensen and Murphy Jensen defeated Marc Goeliner and David Prinosil by 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. In the Women Doubles category Gigi Fernandez and Natalia Zvereva again repeated the history. They defeated Larisa Savchenko Neiland and Jana Novotna by 6-3, 7-5. In the Mixed Doubles category Eugenia Maniokova and Andrei Olhovskiy won the title by defeating Elna Reinach and Danie Visser by 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. In the Junior Championships the Boys Singles was won by Roberto Carretero. The Girls Singles was won by Martina Hingis. The Boys Doubles was won by Steven Downs and James Greenhalgh and the Girls Doubles was won by Laurence Courtois and Nancy Feber.
