Introduction

The French Open is the second Grand Slam Event that is held in a year. It is held over two weeks in mid May and early June. It is the only Grand Slam event that is held in clay courts. This tournament is held in Paris which is situated in France. Earlier in 1891 the French Open was a national tournament only but after 1925 it became open to international competitors. This tournament is named after a World War I hero Roland Garros who was a pilot. French Open is officially known as Tournoi de Roland Garros or the Roland Garros tournament.

 

As this tournament is played on clay courts so it provides great challenge to the participants as the clay courts tend to slower the ball pace and gives an extra bounce. The 1991 French Open Tennis Tournament was one such event.It was played in the Philippe Chatrier Court. This court is made out of red clay.

In the Men Singles event Jim Courier won by defeating Andre Agassi by 3-6, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. In the Women Singles Monica Seles again won the title by defeating Arantxa Sanchez Vicario by 6-3, 6-4. In the men Doubles category John Fitzgerald and Andres Jarryd made a comeback and won the title by defeating Rick Leach and Jim Paugh by 6-0, 7-6. In the Women Doubles Gigi Fenandez and Jana Novotna defeated Larisa Savchenko and Natalia Zvereva by 6-4, 6-0. In the Mixed Doubles category Helena Sukova and Cyril Suk defeated Caroline Vis and Paul Haarhuis by 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. In the Junior Championships Boys Singes was won by Andrei Medvedev. The Girls Singles was won by Anna Smashnova. The Boys Doubles was won by Thomas Enqvizt and Magnus Martinelle and the Girls Doubles was won by Eva Bes and Ines Gorrochategui.
