Introduction

The French Open is the second Grand Slam Event that is held in a year. It is held over two weeks in mid May and early June. So it is the second event held after the Australian Open. It is held in Paris which is situated in France. It is officially known as the Tournoi de Roland Garros or the Roland Garros tournament. It is the only Grand Slam Event in which the events are conducted on clay courts.

 

So this provides a great challenge to the participants as the clay courts tend to slower the ball pace and give extra bounce to the ball. This tournament in its earlier stages was only a national tournament but it was after 1925 that it became open to international competitors. This tournament is named after a hero of World War I who was a pilot.The Philippe Chatrier court is the main court in which the events are generally conducted. In the Men Doubles category Jim Grabb and Patrick McEnroe defeated Mansour Bahrami and Eric Winogradsky by 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6. In the Women Doubles category Larisa Savchenko and Natalia Zvereva defeated Steffi Graff and Gabriela Sabatini by straight sets 6-4, 6-4. In the Mixed Doubles category Manon Bollegraf and Tom Nijssen defeated Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Horacio de la Peria by 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. In the Junior Championships the Boys Singles was won by Fabrice Santoro. The Girls Singles was won by Jennifer Capriati. The Boys Doubles was won by Johan Anderson and Todd Woodbridge and the Girls Doubles was won by Nicole Pratt and Shi-Ting Wang.
