Introduction

Officially known as the Tournoi de Roland Garros or the Roland Garros tournament, the French Open is the second Grand Slam event that is held in a year. It is held over two weeks between mid May and early June in Paris. It is the premier clay court tennis tournament in the world. This tournament is named after a hero of the World War I. He was a pilot. French Open in its earlier stages was a national tournament. It was in 1925 that it became open to international competitors. It is the only Grand Slam event which is conducted in Clay Courts.

In the Women Singles category Martina Navratilova won the title after defeating Andrea Jaegar by straight sets. The score line was 7-6, 6-1. The men Doubles category was won by Sherwood Stewart and Ferdi Taygan after they defeated Hans Gildemeister and Belus Prajoux by 7-5, 6-3, 1-1. On the third set the match was closed. The Women Doubles was won by Martina Navratilova and Anne Smith. They defeated Rosemary Casals and Wendy Turnbull by 6-3, 6-4. In the Mixed Doubles category Wendy Turnbull and John Lloyd defeated Claudia Monteiro and Cassio Motta by 6-2, 7-6.
