World Group: Next year’s World Group is decided a year ahead. The four nations who will win their first round matches this year will qualify for the next year’s World Group. Meanwhile, the four losers of the first round will play the World Group play-offs matches with the four winning teams from World Group II.

These play-offs matches decide which four teams will join the other four teams in the World Group for the forthcoming Fed Cup. The winners of these World Group play-offs are promoted to the World Group for next year. While the losers are relegated to the World Group-II for next year’s Fed Cup.

World Group-II: In this group too, eight teams compete. The four winners of this group play with the losers of World Group for promotion/relegation, while the losers of this World Group-II play with the winners of Group-I-Zonal in the World Group II play-offs.

If the losers of World Group II win their matches, they stay in the World Group II for next year or they are relegated to the Group-I-Zonal levels. Similarly, if the teams from the Group I Zonal win, they will be promoted to the World Group II stage.

Zonal Level Matches

All the other teams who couldn’t find place in the World Group and World Group II play at Zonal levels. There are three zones and in each zone there are two groups—Group 1 and Group II. The teams in the sub-groups are based on their performance. Better teams are placed in Group I and likewise.

Following are the three zones:

  1. The American zone
  2. The Asia-Oceania zone
  3. The Europe-Africa zone
(Unlike other zones that have two groups, the Europe-Africa zone has three groups.)

Every year one team each from the America’s Group I and from Asia-Oceania Zone Group 1 are promoted for World Group-II play-offs matches. Europe/Africa Group I, however, send two teams for World Group-II play-offs matches.
