The format of the Fed Cup has been changed several times owing to the increasing number of participants. In fact, in 1995 many changes were made in the Fed Cup format.

According to the present format, there are two World Groups 1 and 2. Each group will have eight nations in it, and they play each other in their home countries and in their opponents’ home soil over three weekends through out the year.

Where as other nations will play in the regional qualifying events.

Match Format

For World Group matches and for their play-offs matches, each tie is played in the best of five match series. These matches are played within two days. On day one, two singles matches are played and the reverse single matches are played on the next day, followed by the doubles.

World Group and World Group II’s first round matches are played on a knock-out basis at home and away. Same rule is followed for World Group and World Group II’s play-offs matches.

Similarly, World Group semifinals and final are played on knock out basis at home ground and away.

While at Zonal Groups I, II and III, matches are played in the best of three series. Out of the three matches, two are singles and a double match.
