Introduction

The most important competition in women's tennis at the national level is the Fed Cup. The 41st edition of this was the 2003 Fed Cup. Overall, 79 countries took part in the competition.

In the 2003 Fed Cup, from Group I of the American Zone, Brazil and Canada advanced to World Group Play-off, while Bahamas and Paraguay were relegated to Group II. From Group II, Puerto Rico and Chile were promoted to Group I.

 

From Group I of the Asia / Oceania Zone, Indonesia and Japan advanced to World Group Play-off, while Hong Kong, China and Kazakhstan were relegated to Group II. From Group II, India and Philippines were promoted to Group I.

From Group I of the Europe / Africa zone, Hungary, South Africa, Israel and Switzerland advanced to World Group Play-off, while Georgia, Luxembourg, Ireland and Romania were relegated to Group II.

From Group II, Greece and Lithuania were promoted to Group I.

In the World Group Play-offs, Argentina defeated Hungary by a score of 3-2. Australia defeated Colombia by a score of 3-2. Austria defeated Canada by a score of 4-1. Croatia defeated Brazil by a score of 4-1.

Czech Republic defeated South Africa by a score of 4-1. Germany defeated Indonesia by a score of 3-2. Japan defeated Sweden by a score of 4-1. Switzerland defeated Israel by a score of 4-1.

In the quarterfinals of the World Group of the 2003 Fed Cup, the United States defeated Italy by a score of 5-0. Belgium defeated Slovakia by a score of 5-0. Russia defeated Slovenia by a score of 5-0. France defeated Spain by a score of 4-1.

In the semi finals, the United States defeated Belgium by a score of 4-1 and France defeated Russia by a score of 3-2.

In the final, France defeated the United States by a score of 4-1. This was the second time that France had won this cup.
