Performance of Hungary at the 2003 Fed Cup
Hungary at the 2003 Fed Cup participated in the tournament from Europe – Africa Zone and was placed in Group 1.
Hungary had to struggle before registering 2-1 victory over Netherlands in the first Round Robin tie.
Hungary won the second round robin tie against Great Britain with ease. Hungary defeated Great Britain by 3-0.
In the third Round Robin tie, they scratched out a 2-1 victory over Poland.
Hungary got out by Ireland in the last Round Robin tie and entered the knock out round, where they put down Ukraine’s attack by 2-1 and marched ahead to the World Group play off.
They played against Argentina in the World Group play off round. In the first match, C.Fernandez of Argentina defeated R.Kuti Kis of Hungary by 6-3 and 6-1. In the second match, P.Mandula of Hungary defeated N.Gussoni of Argentina in sets of 6-3 and 6-4.
In the third match, C.Fernandez of Argentina defeated P.Mandula. In the fourth match, N.Gussoni of Argentina defeated K.Marosi in sets of 6-2 and 6-3. In the doubles match, K.Marosi and P.Mandula of Hungary defeated M.Salerni and N.Gussoni of Argentina in straight sets of 7-6(4) and 6-2. The tie ended in a 3-2 defeat for Hungary at the hands of Argentina. Therefore Hungary was ousted from the tournament.
