Cuba at the 2003 Federation Cup

Cuba at the 2003 Fed Cup played their ties from the Group I of the Americas zone. Cuba made its first appearance in the competition in the year 1991. The team from Cuba had entered in the round of 32 in the 1994 competition and it is the team’s most successful performance so far in the competition.

The players for Cuba were Yanet Nunez-Mojarena, Yamile Fors-Guerra, Wilfredo Henry-Torriente and Elsa Serrano-Eduards.

The team played three Round Robin ties and all the ties were contested on the outdoor clay surface in Mexico.

In their first tie Cuba played matches against El Salvador but the team could not win the round instead it had a close fight against their rivals. The score with which the Cuban team lost was 1-2.

In the second tie, the team played against Paraguay on 24th April in the Round Robin. In these matches Cuba performed well and won all the matches. Thus, it defeated team of Paraguay by a score of 3-0.

On 25th April Cuba played matches against Brazil. These were the Round Robin matches. B.Colosio of Brazil defeated E.Serrano-Eduards of Cuba by 6-0 and 6-1 in the first match.

In the second match, M.Alves of Brazil defeated Y.Nunez-Mojarena in sets of 6-1 and 6-0. In the doubles match, J.Cortez and B.Colosio of Brazil defeated Y.Nunez-Mojarena and Y.Fors-Guerra of Cuba in straight sets of 6-2 and 6-2. Thus, Brazil defeated Cuba by a score of 3-0.
