Costa Rica at the 2003 Federation Cup

The participation of Costa Rica at the 2003 Fed Cup was from the Group II of the Americas zone. The Costa Rican team made its first appearance in the competition in the year 1992 and since then, the team had not been able to advance beyond their group but in the 2001 competition, the team finished well and stood fourth in the Group II of their zone. Following is the list of players from Costa Rica: Karla Golfin, Julia Roca-Valverde, Monica Penon-Portmann, Maria Julia Valverde and Andrea Brenes.

All the ties for Costa Rica were played in Puerto Rico on an outdoor hard surface.

The Costa Rican team played four Round Robin ties and the first tie was against the team from Ecuador in which the Costa Rican team lost all their matches ending up with a score of 0-3.

The second tie of the team was held against the team of Venezuela and the Costa Rican team again lost the round by a score of 0-3.

The third tie was played against Puerto Rico and the rival team taking advantage of playing on home soil defeated the Costa Rican team by a score of 0-3.

On 27th, April Costa Rica played the fourth set of Round Robin matches against Dominican Republic. N.Baez of Dominican Republic defeated A.Brenes by 2-6, 6-3 and 6-3 in the first match. In the second match, V.Masalles of Dominican Republic defeated J.Roca-Valverde in sets of 6-4 and 6-2. In the third match, V.Masalles and N. Baez of Dominican Republic defeated A.Brenes and J.Roca-Valverde of Costa Rica by 7-6(4) and 6-3. Thus, Dominican Republic defeated Costa Rica by a score of 3-0 in the last set of Round Robin matches.
