Performance of Belarus at the 2003 Fed Cup
The first set of Round Robin matches were played on 21st April between Belarus and Luxembourg. In the first match, O.Barabanschikova defeated C.Francois of Luxembourg by 6-0 and 6-0. In the second match, M.Minella of Luxembourg defeated T.Poutchek in sets of 3-6, 6-4 and 6-4.
In the doubles rubber, N.Ostrovskaya and O.Barabanschikova defeated M.Poos and F.Thill of Luxembourg by 6-2 and 6-1. Thus, Belarus defeated Luxembourg by a score of 2-1 in this Round Robin.
Belarus played their second set of Round Robin matches against Estonia on 24th April. In the first match, N.Ostrovskaya defeated M.Ruutel of Estonia by 6-3 and 6-2. In the second match, T.Poutchek defeated M.Ani of Estonia in sets of 6-4, 7-6(5).
In the doubles match, N.Ostrovskaya and O.Barabanschikova defeated I.Poljakova and M.Ruutel of Estonia in sets of 6-4 and 6-0. Thus, Belarus defeated Estonia by a score 3-0 in this round.
On the third consecutive day, Belarus played matches of the Round Robins against Switzerland. E.Gagliardi of Switzerland defeated N.Ostrovskaya of Belarus in sets of 3-6, 6-3 and 12-10. In second match, P.Schnyder of Switzerland defeated O.Barabanschikova of Belarus by 6-3 and 6-4. Thus, Switzerland defeated Belarus by a score of 2-0.
The Playoffs between Belarus and Israel were played on 26th April. N.Ostrovskaya defeated T.Obziler of Israel by 6-4 and 6-3. In the second match, A.Smashnova of Israel defeated T.Poutchek of Belarus in sets of 6-4 and 6-0.
In the third match, T.Obziler and A.Smashnova of Israel defeated O.Barabanschikova and N.Ostrovskaya of Belarus by 1-6, 6-4 and 8-6. Thus, Israel defeated Belarus at the 2003 Fed Cup by 2-1 in the Play-offs.
