Introduction

The most important competition in women’s tennis at the national level was the Federation Cup. The 40th edition of this cup was the 2002 Federation Cup. Altogether, 83 countries took part in the tournament. The World Group comprised of sixteen nations and was a knockout tournament, similar to the Davis Cup format.

Performance of 2002 Federation Cup

In the 2002 Federation Cup, from Group I of the American Zone, Canada and Colombia advanced to the World Group Play-off, while Puerto Rico and Venezuela were relegated to Group II.

 

From Group II, Cuba and El Salvador were promoted to Group I. From the Group I of the Asia / Oceania Zone, China and Japan advanced to the World Group Play-off, while India and Philippines were relegated to Group II. From Group II, Kazakhstan and Malaysia were promoted to Group I. From the Group I of the Europe / Africa Zone, Israel, Slovenia, Netherlands and Ukraine advanced to the World Group Play-off, while Bosnia and Herzegovina, Portugal, Greece and Turkey were relegated to Group II. From Group II, Denmark, Ireland, Great Britain and South Africa were promoted to Group I. After the World Group Play-off matches, Colombia and Slovenia were promoted to the World Group. Argentina, Czech Republic, Australia, Russia, United States and Sweden were retained in the World Group. China, Canada, Netherlands, Japan, Israel and Ukraine were retained in the Zonal Group I. Hungary and Switzerland was relegated to Zonal Group I.

Here’s a summary of the performance of 2002 Federation Cup

In the quarter finals of the World Group of the 2002 Federation Cup, Austria defeated Croatia by a score of 4-1. Spain defeated Germany by a score of 5-0. Slovakia defeated France by a score of 4-1. Italy defeated Belgium by a score of 4-1. In the semi finals, Spain defeated Austria by a score of 3-2 and Slovakia defeated Italy by a score of 3-1. In the final, Slovakia defeated Spain by a score of 3-1. This was the first time Slovakia won this cup.
