South Africa at the 2002 Federation Cup

The 2002 Federation Cup was the 40th edition of the most spectacular sporting events in the history of the women’s tennis. There were about 83 teams participating in this competition and South Africa at the 2002 Federation Cup was one of them. South Africa started its career in this tournament in the year 1963 and they have emerged as champions in the year 1972 and in the very next year they were runners-up of the Fed Cup.

South Africa at the 2002 Federation Cup was in the Euro/African zone group II along with the teams like Algeria, Botswana, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Great Britain, Ireland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, Norway and Tunisia. South Africa played really well in all the matches they played in this competition. In the first match against Liechtenstein South Africa had no problems at all as they routed Liechtenstein by the score of 3:0. Then in the match against Latvia South Africa was having a tensed time but still they defeated Latvia by the score of 2:1. In the last round robin match against Algeria South Africa defeated Algeria with ease as to take the match by the score of 3:0. Even in the first round of the zonal round South Africa played really well to defeat Malta by the score of 3:0. In the quarterfinals South Africa played against Finland, in this match South Africa defeated Finland comfortably by the score of 2:0. As a result of this splendid performance South Africa gained promotion in the group I for the 2003 Fed Cup.
