Introduction

The 2002 Federation Cup was the 40th edition of the most popular sporting event in the women’s tennis. There were about 83 teams participating in this competition and Slovenia at the 2002 Federation Cup was one of them. Slovenia first played in this competition in the year 1992 and its best performance has come in 1992 and 1999 when they reached the semifinals of the zonal round. So far Slovenia has not reached the world group in this competition.

Slovenia at the 2002 Federation Cup was in the Euro/African zone group I along with the teams like Belarus, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Israel, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine and Yugoslavia. Slovenia started up well in the first round robin match against Ukraine, in this match Slovenia outclassed Ukraine to win the match by the score of 3:0. In the next match against Greece Slovenia did have little problems but they over came that as to defeat Greece by the score of 2:1. Even in the third round robin match against Belarus Slovenia defeated them by the same score of 2:1. Then in the first round of that zone they played against Yugoslavia, Slovenia easily defeated Yugoslavia by the score of 2:0. This win gave them birth in the world group play-off against Ukraine. Slovenia had defeated Ukraine in the zonal round but in this round Ukraine was playing better, still Slovenia comfortably defeated Ukraine in that match by the score of 4:1. After wining all their matches in this competition Slovenia gained a world group birth for the 2003 Fed Cup.
