Introduction

The 2002 Federation Cup was the 40th edition of the most fabulous sporting events in the women’s tennis. From this year onwards the world group format was the same as the Davis Cup where only 16 teams would participate. There were about 83 teams taking part in this competition and Romania at the 2002 Federation Cup was one of them. Romania started playing in the Fed Cup since 1973 and their best performance has come on their debut when they reached the semifinals of the world group but failed to reach the finals. Also there after they reached the quarterfinals of this competition on five occasions in the year 1973, 1974, 1978, 1980 and 1981.

Performance of Romania at the 2002 Federation Cup

Romania at the 2002 Federation Cup was in the Euro/African zone group I along with the teams like Belarus, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Israel, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine and Yugoslavia. Romania played brilliantly but still they could not get a victory on their name as they lost the first round robin match to Israel by the score of 2:1. Even in the second round robin match against Netherlands Romania played really well but it was not their day as they lost this match as well by the score of 2:1. In the last round robin match against Bosnia Romania got their first win. In this match Romania dominated from the beginning as to defeat Bosnia by the score of 3:0. So after wining one match they regained their spot in the same group I, or else they would be relegated to group II for the 2003 Fed Cup.

Here’s a summary of the performance of Romania at the 2002 Federation Cup

The overall performance of Romania at the 2002 Federation Cup was not at its best as they just managed to win a single match out of three matches they played.
