Puerto Rico at the 2002 Federation Cup

The 2002 Federation Cup was the 40th edition of the most prestigious sporting events in the women’s tennis. From this year onwards the world group was having a similar format of the Davis Cup where there would be 16 teams in the group. There were about 83 teams which participated in this competition and Puerto Rico at the 2002 Federation Cup was one of them. Puerto Rico began its Fed Cup campaign in the year 1992 and in this year’s competition they were appearing for the 11th time. Till date their best performance has come in the year 1995 where they won all their round robin matches to get qualified for the group I in the American zone.

Puerto Rico at the 2002 Federation Cup was in the American zone group I along with teams like Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. Puerto Rico had a very poor start in the first round robin match against Canada, in this match Puerto Rico was easily defeated by Canada by the score of 3:0. Even in the next round robin match Puerto Rico had the same result as they were defeated by Mexico in that match by the score of 3:0. In their last match against Bahamas Puerto Rico again lost the match but this time they were able to win a single game, the score of that match was 2:1 in the favor of Bahamas. As a result of such a poor performance Puerto Rico was relegated to the group II for the 2003 Fed Cup.

The over all performance of Puerto Rico at the 2002 Federation Cup was very poor and so they got demoted to the group II for the up coming tournament.
