Philippines at the 2002 Federation Cup

The Federation Cup is the most recognized competition in the women’s tennis. This tournament originated in the year 1963 as the International Tennis Federation celebrated its 50th anniversary. The 2002 Federation Cup was the 40th edition of the most specific tournament in the women’s tennis. There were around 83 teams competing in this competition and Philippines at the 2002 Federation Cup were one of them. Philippines began its Fed Cup campaign in the year 1974 and its best ever performance of this competition has been in the year 1982 when they reached the world group for the first time.

Philippines at the 2002 Federation Cup was in the Asia/Oceania zone group I along with the teams like China. Chinese Taipei, India, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Thailand and Uzbekistan. Philippines had to play Japan in the first round robin match, in this match Japan was in total control of the match as they defeated Philippines with ease by the score of 3:0. In the second round robin match against Uzbekistan Philippines did try to show a better performance but failed to do so as they lost the match to Uzbekistan by the score of 2:1. Later in the last three round robins matches Philippines were totally out played by China, Thailand and Hong Kong. Philippines lost all the three matches by the same score of 3:0. Philippines lost all the matches they played in this competition and as a result they were demoted to the group II for the 2003 Fed Cup.

The over all performance of Philippines at the 2002 Federation Cup was disgusting as they could not win a single match in the five matches they played. They just managed to win a single game out of five matches, this shows that this was the poorest presentation by Philippines in Fed Cup.
