All the ties of the team were played in China on the outdoor hard surface; the team played 4 Round Robin ties. In their first tie the team took on the challenge of the Korean Republic team but could not bear it and lost the tie by 0-3. In the second round the team played against Chinese Taipei which was equally a hard challenge for the New Zealand team; the team lost their second tie as well by a score of 0-3. The third tie was contested against the team of India and there was a very tough competition between the two teams but the New Zealand team held their control in the crucial match and won the tie by 2-1. The New Zealand team then entered in their fourth Round Robin tie and took on the challenge of the Indonesian team which again proved too hard to overcome for the team.
The New Zealand team lost their last tie by a score of 0-3 and remained in their group.

New Zealand at the 2002 Federation Cup had a very bad performance the team lost three ties out of the four and could not advance any further in the competition. The team however was not relegated to any group for the next year’s competition.
