The Federation Cup has been the most coveted tournament in the women’s category of professional tennis. It began in 1963 as a tournament between United States and Great Britain. The participating countries played in the qualifying stage against themselves, resulting from which the entrants to the World group stage were decided. The 2002 championship was the 40th edition of the Federation Cup. Liechtenstein started its international tennis career in 1996. A total of 83 nations participated in the tournament. In the next round robin clash against Algeria, Liechtenstein again was defeated by score of 0-3. The next match against Latvia was also lost by a score of 0-3. Such a kind of similar dismal performance was repeated when Liechtenstein again lost the final qualifier to Ireland by score of 0-3. Thus Liechtenstein was ousted from the 2002 Federation Cup.
