Korea at the 2002 Federation Cup

The 2002 Federation Cup was the 40th edition of the most famous sporting event in the women’s tennis. There were about 83 teams that took part in this competition and Korea, Rep at the 2002 Federation Cup was one of them. Korea began its Fed Cup campaign since 1973 and its best performance has been in the year 1992 when they reached the world group second round after convincingly wining its zonal round matches.

Korea, Rep at the 2002 Federation Cup was in the Asia/Oceania group I along with the teams like China, Chinese Taipei, India, Hong Kong, Thailand, New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines and Uzbekistan.

Korea played really well in the first three round robin match against India, New Zealand and Chinese Taipei. In all the three matches Korea had no problems at all as they defeated India, New Zealand and Chinese Taipei with ease and the score was 3:0. In the last round robin match against Indonesia Korea was defeated by the score of 2:1. Then in the first round against Japan Korea again was defeated but this time the score was 3:0. In spite of a superb start in the first three round robins matches Korea showed a dismal performance in the last two matches.

As a result of this poor display in the last two matches Korea did not qualify for the further rounds but still stay in the same group I for the 2003 Federation Cup.

he overall performance of Korea, Rep at the 2002 Federation Cup was excellent in the first three round robins matches but later on they played really depressingly and therefore they did not qualify for the play-off rounds.
