Japan at the 2002 Federation Cup took part in the Federation cup for the first time in 1964. The best performance of the country was in 1996, when it could reach the semi finals. In 1997, the first round tie with France comprised of the maximum number of games in a tie.

Japan at the 2002 Federation Cup took part in Group I of the Asia / Oceania Zone. The other countries in this group were China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, New Zealand, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand and Uzbekistan.

 

Japan took part in five Round Robin matches. For all the matches, the host was China and the surface was Hard – Outdoor. On 4 March 2002, the match was against Philippines. Japan defeated Philippines by a score of 3-0. On 5 March 2002, the match was against Thailand. Japan defeated Thailand by a score of 3-0. On 6 March 2002, the match was against Uzbekistan. Japan defeated Uzbekistan by a score of 3-0. On 7 March 2002, the match was against Hong Kong. Japan defeated Hong Kong by a score of 3-0. On 8 March 2002, the match was against China. Japan was defeated by China by a score of 1-2. In the first round, the opponent was Korea, Rep. The date of the matches was 9 March 2002. Japan defeated Korea, Rep. by a score of 3-0. The World Group qualifying round matches were on 21 July 2002.

The opponent was Colombia. However, the matches were not contested and Colombia got a walkover victory.
