Introduction

Managed and controlled by Tennis Jamaica, Jamaica team entered first time in the tournament from the 1976 tournament. Federation Cup is only meant for women and considered to be the most prominent women tennis tournament at the international level. Jamaica at the 2002 Federation Cup took active part as one of the 83 teams from all over the world. In the first tournament, it played from the World Group Qualifying Round. Jamaica played against Mexico in the first round held in its home town on the carpet-indoor surface, but was defeated by Mexico with a score line of 0-3.

 

It was in the final 32 teams of the World Group Main Draw in the 1992 Fed Cup.Jamaica was degraded to the America Group I D from the World Group Qualifying Round in the year 1992.

Performance of Jamaica at the 2002 Federation Cup

Jamaica at the 2002 Federation Cup was one of the participants of the Group II B of the America Zone. It dominated the entire first round robin by winning all the three matches against Eastern Caribbean. Jamaica won the second and third round robins against Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago with a score line of 2-1. In the fourth and fifth round robins, it was defeated by Guatemala and Cuba with a score line 1-2. Jamaica did not get promoted or demoted and stayed in the same group for the up coming tournament.

Jamaica at the 2002 Federation Cup exhibited average performance as it did not get promoted or demoted. It won three out of five rounds. Against Eastern Caribbean, Costa Rica, and Trinidad & Tobago it played very well. But it could not maintain its firm position against Guatemala and Cuba and was defeated by these countries.
