The Federation up is among the leading women’s tennis tournaments being held annually. The tournament is being played between teams fielded by different nations and not individual players. The 2002 Fed Cup was the 40th edition of the tournament. Altogether there 83 teams participating in this tournament. India at the 2002 Federation Cup participated from the group I of the Asia/Oceanic Zone. They debuted in this tournament in the year 1977. Their performance in the last tournament was average with 2 wins and same number of losses. They were not promoted neither they were relegated. Thus their performance did not make much difference to their standing in this tournament.

Thus their campaign at this tournament ended with loosing all the ties they were involved into.

They aptly met with relegation to lower group because of their dismal performance. Thus they were shifted to group II for the next year’s tournament.
