Hong Kong at the 2002 Federation Cup

The Fed Cup is among the most important tennis tournaments in the women’s category being held annually. It is played between teams fielded by different nations and not individual players. Hong Kong, China at the 2002 Federation Cup participated from the group I of the Asia Oceanic Zone. They made their first appearance in this tournament in the year 1981. They put up a good show in the last tournament by winning 3 out of the 4 clashes they were involved into. However their performance was not worthy enough to earn them a promotion to the world group. Their performance in the last tournament raised great hopes for their success in this tournament.

Hong Kong, China at the 2002 Federation Cup could not advance beyond the round robin league of their group. Their first clash in this tournament was against Uzbekistan. They lost the very first tie by a margin of 1-2. The next opponent was China, P.R. in the round robin league. They continued to loose this one also by a margin of 0-3. Their next clash was against Thailand. This time they fought back to win the tie by a margin of 2-1. They next locked horns with Japan. In this clash they were back to their loosing self. They were defeated by a margin of 0-3. Their final clash was against Philippines in the round robin league. They managed to pull off a victory this time by a margin of 3-0.

Hong Kong, China at the 2002 Federation Cup displayed a very dismal performance. They lost 3 ties out of the five they played in the round robin league. Although they did not face any relegation but could not even earn a promotion to the higher group.
