Guatemala at the 2002 Federation Cup

The Fed Cup is one of the most sought after women’s tennis championship being held annually. The tournament is played between teams fielded by different nations than individual players. Guatemala at the 2002 Federation Cup participated from the group II of the America’s Zone. They made their maiden appearance in this tournament in the year 1992. In their last outing at this tournament they managed to clinch 2 victories. This was instrumental to save them from a relegation to a lower group. They attained the seventh in their group by wining the playoff. Their good show at the last tournament raised hope for better performance in this year’s tournament.

Guatemala at the 2002 Federation Cup reached till the final round of their group. Their first clash in the round robin league was against El Salvador. They emerged winner I this tie by a margin of 2-1. The next opponent was Cuba in the round robin league. They lost this tie by a margin of 0-3. They strike back in the next tie against Barbados. They won the clash by a margin of 3-0. This win took them to the first round playoff of the group. Here they faced Chile. They could not continue with their winning streak and lost this clash by a margin of 1-2. Then they were pitted against Bermuda in the final round of the playoff for seventh and eighth position. They won this clash by a margin of 3-0.

Guatemala at the 2002 Federation Cup put up a mixed performance. Although they managed to pull off couple of victories but could not earn a promotion to a higher group. However they clinched some of the great victories by a huge margin. Despite of their loss they left an indelible impression by their high sporting spirit.
