Introduction

The Federation cup was started in the year 1963 by the International tennis Federation. The 2002 Federation Cup was the 40th edition of the most famous sporting events in the history of the women’s tennis. There were about 83 teams which took part in this competition and Great Britain at the 2002 Federation Cup was one of them. Great Britain started playing in this competition since 1963 and it is only the fourth team behind Australia, France and Italy to compete in every Federation Cup competition. Great Britain has entered the finals of this competition on four occasions that is 1967, 1971, 1972 and 1981 but has failed to win the title on all those occasions.

Great Britain at the 2002 Federation Cup was in the Euro/African Zone group II along with the teams like Algeria, Botswana, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, South Africa, Ireland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, Norway and Tunisia. Great Britain had a very brilliant start in this competition as they won all their matches without conceding a single game to their opponents. In the first and the second round robin match Greta Britain defeated Malta and Norway very easily. The score in those matches read as 3:0 in favor of Great Britain. Even in the Quarterfinals Great Britain had no problems at all as they easily defeated Lithuania by the score of 2:0. This spectacular performance of Great Britain gained them place in the group I for the 2003 Federation Cup.
