France at the 2002 Federation Cup

France has been playing in the Federation Cup since from the 1963 tournament which was the very first tournament of this well-known women international tennis championship. In the first round of the World Group on the indoor surface hosted by Great Britain, it got its very first victory over Germany F.R. In the quarter finals, France was defeated by South Africa. It won the championship crown in the 1997 Fed Cup by defeating Netherlands with a score line of 4-1 in the finals of World Group I. Its score lines till the 2002 Fed Cup, it had never demoted to its zonal groups.

France reached the semifinals nine times till the 2002 tournament. France at the 2002 Federation Cup was a favorite team to win the crown and it entered 40th Fed Cup with high hopes and expectations.

France at the 2002 Federation Cup directly played from the World Group. In the first round, its opponent country was Argentina. Here it won three rounds and defeated Argentina with a score line of 3-2. Qualified to the quarter finals, Slovak Republic was its challenger. Here it could not stand against the challenge given by Slovak Republic and was defeated with a score line of 1-4. With this defeat, it ended its journey from the tournament and remained in the World Group for the next Fed Cup.

France at the 2002 Federation Cup performed as usually with excellent skills and full effort. But it could not continue its haunt as it was shockingly defeated by Slovak Republic in the quarter finals with a very low score line. Here it managed to win only one match and gave up all other matches to Slovak Republic.
