Introduction

Finland at the 2002 Federation Cup took part in the Federation cup for the first time in 1968. The best performance of this country was in 1993, when it reached the quarter final and lost to Australia.

Finland at the 2002 Federation Cup took part in Group II of the Europe / Africa Zone. The other countries in this group were Algeria, Botswana, Denmark, Egypt, Great Britain, Ireland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, Norway, South Africa and Tunisia.

 

Finland played three Round Robin matches. For all the matches, the host was South Africa and the surface was Hard – Outdoor. On 9 April 2002, the match was against Egypt. Finland defeated Egypt by a score of 3-0. On 10 April 2002, the match was against Ireland. Finland was defeated by Ireland by a score of 0-3. On 11 April 2002, the match was against Botswana. Finland defeated Botswana by a score of 3-0. In the first round, the opponent was Tunisia. The date of the matches was 12 April 2002. Finland defeated Tunisia by a score of 3-0. In the quarter final, the opponent was South Africa. The date of the matches was 13 April 2002. Finland was defeated by South Africa by a score of 0-2.

Finland at the 2002 Federation Cup showed extremely good fighting spirit. Out of the three Round Robin matches, it won two matches and lost one match. Interestingly, all the matches were clean sweeps of all the three matches. Further, the team defeated Tunisia by a clean sweep in the first round. However, in the quarter final, Finland could not win a single match and was eliminated from the tournament.
