The Federation Cup was started with a view to provide an international platform for the women players in professional tennis. It started in 1963 as a tournament between United States and Great Britain. The various participating countries played in the qualifying stage against themselves, resulting from which the entrants to the World group stage were decided. The 2002 championship was the 40th edition of the Federation Cup. Dominican Republic started its international tennis career in 1990. A total of 83 nations participated in the tournament. Dominican Republic at the 2002 Federation Cup was one of the early ousted teams.

The third qualifier again resulted in the Dominican Republic winning against Chile by 2-1. However, Dominican Republic lost the next clash to El Salvador by 0-3. The last qualifier was however won by Dominican Republic again against Bermuda by score of 3-0. Thus following the defeat to El Salvador, Dominican Republic was ousted from the 2002 Federation Cup.
