Croatia at the 2002 Federation Cup

Croatia at the 2002 Federation Cup took part in the Federation Cup for the first time in 1992. Before this year, the players from Croatia contested for Yugoslavia.

Croatia at the 2002 Federation Cup took part in the World Group. The other countries in this group were Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States.

In the first round, the opponent was Czech Republic. The date of the matches was 27 to 28 April 2002. The venue for the matches was Bol in Croatia and the surface was Clay – Outdoor. Croatia defeated Czech Republic by a score of 3-2. In the quarter finals, the opponent was Austria. The date of the matches was 20 to 21 July 2002. The venue of the matches was Portschach in Austria and the surface was Clay – Outdoor. Croatia was defeated by Austria by a score of 1-4.

Croatia at the 2002 Federation Cup reached upto the quarter finals of the World Group. In the first round it played extremely well and defeated the Czech Republic by a very small margin. Due to this win it reached the quarter final of the World Group. Here it was defeated by Austria by a handsome margin. Taking into consideration that Croatia was a relatively new entrant in the Federation Cup, its performance of maintaining its position in the World Group was notable. The overall performance of the team was very impressive. As it won the first round, it was not required to play the play-off ties with the zonal group I qualifiers.
