Costa Rica at the 2002 Federation Cup

Costa Rica at the 2002 Federation Cup had played its 11th Fed Cup with a strong will to reach the World Group. The Federation Cup is recognized as one of the high-flying tennis tournaments, which is exclusively held for women. In the year 1992 Costa Rica made its debut entry in the Federation Cup. In the first round of the America Group I D on the clay-outdoor surface hosted by Mexico it lost two round robins against Chile and Venezuela and won one round robin against Jamaica. Costa Rica with its best results was in the final four teams of its respective group in the year 2001.

Costa Rica at the 2002 Federation Cup was one of the average performers of the Group II B of the America Zone. Guatemala was its opponent team in the first round robin. Here it defeated Guatemala with a score line of 2-1. It lost the second round robin against Jamaica with a score line of 1-2. In the third round robin it was defeated by Cuba with a low score line of 0-3. It played and defeated Trinidad & Tobago with a 2-1 score line in the fourth round robin. It got a great three match victory over Eastern Caribbean in the fifth round robin. Costa Rica progressed to the Group II A for the 2003 Fed Cup.

Performance of Costa Rica at the 2002 Federation Cup was quite moderate. It won three out of five round robins. Against Eastern Caribbean, it won all the matches with its full effort. It faced slightly tough competition with Guatemala, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago. But failed to in its efficiency against Cuba.
