Introduction

The Federation Cup has emerged as a simple tournament between United States and Great Britain in 1963. It is managed by the International Tennis Federation on similar lines as that of Davis Cup. The various participating countries played in the qualifying stage against themselves, resulting from which the entrants to the World group stage were decided. The 2002 championship was the 40th edition of the Federation Cup. Chile started its international tennis career in 1968. A total of 83 nations participated in the tournament. Chile at the 2002 Federation Cup was one of the average teams.

Chile at the 2002 Federation Cup was placed in the Group II of the American zone. In the first round robin match against Panama, Chile won the contest by a margin of 2-1. Next, Chile was the looser against El Salvador by 0-3 in the second round robin match. The third qualifier again resulted in the Chilean defeat to Dominican Republic by 1-2. Also, Chile continued its dynamic trend and won the next clash against Bermuda by 3-0. The last qualifier was however lost to Bolivia by score of 1-2. However, Chile was ousted from the 2002 Federation Cup owing to the lost matches.
