Bermuda at the 2002 Federation Cup

The Federation Cup started with a view to provide an effective and an alternate platform for the women players in professional tennis. It started in 1963 as a tournament between United States and Great Britain. It is managed by the International Tennis Federation on similar lines as that of Davis Cup. The various participating countries played in the qualifying stage against themselves, resulting from which the entrants to the World group stage were decided. The 2002 championship was the 40th edition of the Federation Cup. Bermuda started its international tennis career in 1996. A total of 83 nations participated in the tournament. Bermuda at the 2002 Federation Cup was one of the average teams.

Bermuda at the 2002 Federation Cup was placed in the Group II of the American zone. In the first round robin match against El Salvador, Bermuda lost the contest by a huge margin of 0-3. Next, Bermuda was again the disgraceful looser against Bolivia by 0-3 in the second round robin match. The third qualifier again resulted in the Bermudan defeat to Panama by score of 1-2. However, Bermuda continued its loosing trend and lost the next clash to Chile by 0-3. The last qualifier was also lost to Dominican Republic by score of 0-3. Thus Bermuda was ousted from the 2002 Federation Cup.

Bermuda at the 2002 Federation Cup was placed in the Group II of the American zone with other nations like Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Eastern Caribbean, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. Bermuda was in extremely bad shape in this tournament. Bermuda could not manage to grab a single win against any of its competitors in the qualifying stage. Bermuda lost all the five matches to El Salvador, Bolivia, Panama, Chile and Dominican Republic and thus was thrown out of the tournament.
