Introduction

The most crucial championship in women’s tennis between the national teams was called the Federation Cup. The 39th edition of this cup was called the 2001 Federation Cup. Overall, ninety countries took part in the championship. The World Group comprised of eight teams and was divided into two pools. The winners of the pools participated in the final.

In the 2001 Federation Cup, from Group I of the American Zone, Venezuela advanced to the World Group Play-off, while Dominican Republic and Ecuador were relegated to Group II. From Group II, Bahamas and Puerto Rico were promoted to Group I. From Group I of the Asia / Oceania Zone, Indonesia advanced to the World Group Play-off, while Kazakhstan and Pacific Oceania were relegated to Group II. From Group II, Philippines and Hong Kong were promoted to Group I. From Group I of the Europe / African Zone, Israel and Sweden advanced to the World Group Play-off, while Denmark, Macedonia, Great Britain and South Africa were relegated to Group II. From Group II, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Portugal, Georgia and Turkey were promoted to Group I.

In the 2001 Federation Cup, there were four play-off matches. Croatia defeated Venezuela by a score of 4-1. Sweden defeated Japan by a score of 3-2. Hungary defeated Israel by a score of 3-0. Austria defeated Indonesia by a score of 3-2. In the second round, France defeated Italy by a score of 4-1. Argentina defeated Germany by a score of 4-1. Russia defeated Slovakia by a score of 3-2. Australia defeated Switzerland by a score of 4-1. France, Russia, Argentina and Australia advanced to the World Group. Italy, Switzerland, Slovakia, Sweden, Croatia, Austria and Hungary would play in the World Group in 2002. Venezuela, Israel, Japan and Indonesia would play in Zonal Group I in 2002. In the World Group, Pool A comprised of Argentina, Czech Republic, France and Russia. Of these, Russia advanced to the final. Pool B comprised of Australia, Belgium, Germany and Spain. From these, Belgium advanced to the final. In the final, Belgium defeated Russia by a score of 2-1. This was Belgium’s first title.
