Introduction

Federation Cup is an esteemed tennis tournament absolutely meant for women at the international level. Till the 1993 tournament, Ukrainian team participated as a part of Soviet Union. Currently handled by Ukrainian Tennis Federation, it made its debut entry in the 1993 Fed Cup. Ukraine played its first tournament from the Europe/Africa Group I C on the hard-outdoor surface hosted by Great Britain. It lost the first three round robins against Russia, Luxembourg, and Great Britain and won the fourth round robin against Lithuania. With its best performance Ukraine reached the Group II Main Draw in the year 1996 by winning all the rounds and promoted to Group I B. Ukraine at the 2001 Federation Cup was one among the 90 countries that had a strong will.

Ukraine at the 2001 Federation Cup competed from the Group I B of the Europe/Africa Zone. Ukraine won the first round robin against South Africa with a score line of 2-1. In the second round robin, it was defeated by Slovenia with a score line of 1-2. Estonia was its opponent nation in the third round robin. Here it won two out of three rounds by defeating Estonia with a score line of 2-1. As a result, it got advanced to the Group I in the 2002 Fed Cup.
