Introduction

Turkey has been playing in this international women tennis tournament since from the 1991 Fed Cup. Its first opponent country was Uruguay in the first round of the World Group Qualifying Round on the hard-outdoor surface hosted by Great Britain. It lost the round and moved down to World Group Consolation Round. It reached the quarter finals by defeating Kenya in the first round and failed to reach the semifinals as it was defeated by Thailand at this level. It was demoted to the Group I B of the Europe/Africa Zone from the Consolation Round in the year 1992.Turkey had succeeded to reach Main Draw of its zonal group in the 1993 Fed Cup. Turkey at the 2001 Federation Cup took part with a wish to reach the World Group.

 

Performance of Turkey at the 2001 Federation Cup

Turkey at the 2001 Federation Cup participated in the Group II D of the Europe/Africa Zone. Turkey got fantastic feat by winning all the three matches of the first three round robins by defeating Botswana, Moldova, and Tunisia. In the fourth round robin, its challenger was Lithuania. Here it won the round by a score line of 2-1. These all triumphs took Turkey to the progressing group, Group I D for the up coming tournament.
