Introduction

Sweden began its partaking in this international women tennis tournament from the 1964 Federation Cup. Sweden team is managed and headed by Swedish Tennis Association. In its first tournament it was in the World Group. In the first round itself on the outdoor grass surface hosted by USA, it came out from the tournament as it was defeated by Canada with a score line of 1-2. Sweden reached the quarter finals of the World Group in the 1970, 1977, 1980, and 1988 tournaments and at this level it was defeated by Australia, Great Britain, and Canada. In this 1996 Fed Cup, it was relegated to Europe/Africa Group I B from the World Group II. Sweden at the 2001 Federation Cup made its appearance in its 38th tournament with a strong intension to bring back the days of its World Group.

 

Performance of Sweden at the 2001 Federation Cup

Sweden at the 2001 Federation Cup contested in the Group I C of the Europe/Africa Zone. It started this tournament with a great victory in the first two round robins against Great Britain and Belarus by winning all the three matches. In the third round robin, Sweden defeated Romania with a score line of 2-1. Advancing to the Group Play-off, in the first round it won against Netherlands with a score line of 2-0. This feat made it to progress to the World Group Play-off. Here in the first round it played and won against Japan with a score line of 3-2. This resulted into progress to the World Group in the 2002 Fed Cup.
