Sri Lanka at the 2001 Federation Cup

Federation Cup is regarded as one of the esteemed international tennis tournaments that is completely held for women. Sri Lanka team is currently under the administration of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association. It started its haunt for the championship from the 1990 Fed Cup. Sri Lanka participated from the World Group Pre-Qualifying Round in its fist tournament. In the first round on the hard-outdoor surface hosted by USA, it was defeated by Malta with a score line of 0-3. It lost the first round of the World Group Consolation Qualifying Round against Luxembourg by a score line of 0-3. With its best performance, it reached the Asia/Oceania Group I Main Draw of the 1992 and 1993 tournaments. Sri Lanka at the 2001 Federation Cup came up with full vigor.

Sri Lanka at the 2001 Federation Cup was in the Group II B of the Asia/Oceania Zone. In the first round robin, it won against Syria with a score line of 3-0. But it lost the second and third round robins against Philippines and Malaysia with a score line of 0-3. In the final round of the Group II 5th to 7th Play-off, Sri Lanka defeated Fiji with a score line of 2-1.

Performance of Sri Lanka at the 2001 Federation Cup was unsatisfactory. It won two rounds and in four rounds it won five out of 12 matches. Against Syria, it dominated the entire round by winning all the three matches. But, shockingly it gave reverse result against Philippines and Malaysiaby losing all the three matches.
