The participating countries played in the qualifying stage against themselves, resulting from which the entrants to the World group stage were decided. The 2001 championship was the 39th edition of the Federation Cup. Malta started its international tennis career in 1986. A total of 90 nations participated in the tournament. Malta at the 2001 Federation Cup was one of the average teams.

Malta at the 2001 Federation Cup was placed in the Group II of the Europe/Africa zone. In the first round robin match against Georgia, Malta lost by 0-3. The next match also featured Malta loosing to Ireland by score of 1-2. The third round robin contest also yielded Malta as the winner over Latvia by 2-1. Eventually, Malta was ousted from the 2001 Federation Cup owing to irregular victories.

Here’s a summary of the performance of Malta at the 2001 Federation Cup

Malta at the 2001 Federation Cup was placed in the Group II of the Europe/Africa zone with some of the other countries like Algeria, Armenia, Botswana, Egypt, Latvia, Lesotho, Moldova, Morocco, Turkey, Tunisia and Portugal. The performance of Malta was inconsistent. Malta won only one match against Latvia. The remaining matches were lost to Georgia and Ireland. The level of performance was also very weak and feeble which further led Malta into the shadows of gloom and helplessness. This led Malta to loose their credibility as a new face in the international squad and thus was ousted from the 2001 Federation Cup.
