Latvia at the 2001 Federation Cup

Latvia at the 2001 Federation Cup took part in the Federation Cup for the first time in 1992. Before 1993, the players from Latvia competed for the Soviet Union. In 1993, the country qualified for the main draw and reached the round of sixteen. This was the best performance from this country.

Latvia at the 2001 Federation Cup took part in Group II of the Europe / Africa Zone. The other teams in this group were Algeria, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Egypt, Finland, Georgia, Ireland, Kenya, Lesotho, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova,Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia and Turkey. Latvia played three Round Robin matches. For all the matches, the host was Turkey and the surface was Clay – Outdoor. On 15 May 2001, the match was against Ireland. Latvia defeated Ireland by a score of 2-1. On 16 May 2001, the match was against Georgia. Latvia was defeated by Georgia by a score of 0-3. On 17 May 2001, the match was against Malta. Latvia was defeated by Malta by a score of 1-2.

Latvia at the 2001 Federation Cup displayed a very shoddy and dismal performance. Out of the three Round Robin matches, the country won the initial match and lost the next two matches. Considering that the country was linked with the Federation Cup for almost a decade, a better performance was expected from the team. The supporters were expecting the team to win some more matches and advance through the rounds of the cup. But the outcome suggested that the country required some more time to capitalize on its experience.
