Kenya at the 2001 Federation Cup

The 2001 Federation Cup was the 39th edition of the most prestigious sporting event in the women’s tennis. There were about 90 teams which participated in this competition and Kenya at the 2001 Federation Cup was one of them. Kenya started playing in this Fed Cup since 1991 and till date it has won only one tie against Cyprus in 1995.

Kenya at the 2001 Federation Cup was in the Euro/Africa group II along with the teams like Algeria, Armenia, Botswana, Egypt, Finland, Georgia, Ireland, Latvia, Lesotho, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia and Turkey. In the first round robin match against Armenia Kenya lost very easily by the score of 3:0. Even in the next round robin match against Bosnia/Herzegovina Kenya were defeated in the same way by the score of 3:0. In the match against Lesotho Kenya showed a better display in the doubles, but in the singles they lost very easily thus giving victory to Lesotho by the score of 2:1. Then in the last round robin match against Egypt the story was same as the first match, Kenya were demolished with ease by Egypt in that match as they took the match by the score of 3:0.

The overall performance of Kenya at the 2001 Federation Cup was disgusting as they could win only one game through out the whole competition. This shows that still Kenya has to take much more practice sessions and be confident with their approach in the match. Till date after playing 13 matches through out this competition since 1991 they have just won a single match by 2:1 and also out of these 13 matches they have won only 3 games out of 52 games they have played.
