India at the 2001 Federation Cup

India made its debut in the Federation Cup in the year 1977. It was initially a part of the World Group and then began playing in the Asia/Oceania zone. India has displayed several memorable performances but has never managed to be a part of the World Group. This fact has been especially disappointing for the millions of Indian fans and also the experts. India has produced several very talented performers over the years, but unfortunately has never managed to emerge triumphant in the tournament. Like all its previous appearances, India at the 2001 Federation Cup was yet again a part of the Group1 A of the Asia/Oceania zone.

India at the 2001 Federation Cup played against countries like Pacific Oceania, New Zealand, Indonesia and Korea. In the first round robin encounter, India played against Pacific Oceania by a score line of 3-0. However, in the next two round robin matches India suffered defeats against New Zealand and Indonesia respectively. New Zealand defeated India by a score line of 2-1 while Indonesia crushed India by a margin of 3-0. After two huge losses, India won its fourth round robin encounter against Korea by a score line of 2-1.

India at the 2001 Federation Cup displayed a below par performance, especially considering the talent and capability of the Indian players. The Indian players had the flair and natural talent but lacked the technical ability and stamina to confront the stronger competitors. It was because of these drawbacks that India could not attain higher pedestals in the Federation Cup. In the 2001 Federation Cup, India was capable of defeating New Zealand and Indonesia. However, the New Zealand team was extremely determined while Indonesia won on sheer talent and high level of confidence. The Indian fans hoped to see their team become a part of the illustrious World Group. However, for yet another year the Indian fans had to see their team lose and stay in the Asia/Oceania zone.
